It is no longer fashionable to tell the history of photography as a series of technical advances, but much remains to be learned by focusing on processes and materials. Join Deputy Director for Art & Interpretation and Curator of Photography Seth Feman, PhD to explore the Chrysler’s photography collection through the lens of photographic media in our final installment of the Curator in Your Computer series. Feman will introduce different photographic processes, including daguerreotype, cyanotype, ambrotype, collodion print, and photogravure. He will present them almost chronologically; however, the focus will be on how artists have leveraged their materials to create new meanings, from the dawn of photography to today.
About the Speaker
Seth Feman, PhD is the Chrysler’s Deputy Director for Art & Interpretation and Curator of Photography. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in art history from Vassar College and a Master of Arts and PhD in American studies from the College of William & Mary. His dissertation on modernism in Washington, D.C. and other published work on American art examines how qualities of affect, mobility, and vision become embedded in museum spaces, the built environment, the language of the media, and specific works of art. His scholarship has received support from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Getty Foundation, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Henry Luce Foundation. Before coming to the Chrysler in 2012, Feman was an educator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and taught at the College of William & Mary and Lewis & Clark College.
