You may be familiar with the Chrysler Museum's rich holdings of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century traditional African art, but the collection is growing with contemporary works. Kimberli Gant, PhD, the Chrysler's McKinnon Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, will introduce you to some of them in our third installment of the Curator in Your Computer series. With her academic focus on contemporary African diasporan arts, Gant will discuss several pieces by major international artists, including Wangechi Mutu, William Kentridge, and Elias Sime. Discover how their images enhance the traditional collection of African Art and expand the very definition of contemporary art.
About the Speaker
Kimberli Gant, PhD, is the Chrysler Museum's McKinnon Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art. A student of art history, she holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, a graduate degree from Columbia University, and an undergraduate degree from Pitzer College. Before coming to the Chrysler, she was the Mellon Doctoral Fellow in the Arts of Global Africa Department at the Newark Museum in New Jersey and worked as the Director of Exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora Arts. She has also served as a guest curator for Deutsche Bank New York and the Department of African American/African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. Her career includes many prestigious exhibitions, including Multiple Modernisms at the Chrysler, Wondrous Worlds: Art & Islam Through Time & Place, De-Luxe, and There is No Looking Glass Here: Wide Sargasso Sea Re-Imagined.
