Members’ Exhibition Preview
Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club
Thursday, October 6
6–9 p.m.

Celebrate the premiere of Black Orpheus: Jacob Lawrence and the Mbari Club. This exhibition explores the connection between African American artist Jacob Lawrence and his West African-based contemporaries. The Mbari Artists and Writers Club, an international consortium of artists and writers in post-independence Nigeria, published the arts journal Black Orpheus from 1957 to 1967. The exhibition's core centers on the publication and the influence of African Modernism on Lawrence.

Museum members are invited to preview the first museum exhibition of Lawrence’s Nigeria series and the international artists featured in Black Orpheus. During the evening, exhibition co-curators Kimberli Gant, PhD, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum, and Ndubuisi C. Ezeluomba, PhD, Curator of African Art at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, will give a talk in the Kaufman Theater. Enjoy spoken word, Umfundalai African Dance performances by Pink Pearls Dance Company, the Norfolk State Jazz Combo, and West African-inspired refreshments.

Each Museum member will receive one complimentary drink ticket. Masterpiece Society members are invited to a private exhibition tour at 5 p.m.

Current Museum members will receive an invitation by mail. For more information about Museum membership or to upgrade, please contact Cody Acra at (757) 333-6325 or cacra@chrsyler.org.
